NAME THAT STREET
The City of Sidney is seeking suggestions on naming the new east-west street that will be constructed in the East Sidney Development. This new street will connect with Toledo Street at the Fort Sidney Road intersection and will continue on to Link Road 17-J, near the wastewater treatment facility. It will accommodate several new developments, including the new Sidney Regional Medical Center, light commercial development and new housing subdivisions.
A deadline of Nov. 7 has been set for submission of street names. Megan McGown, Community Development Director, will coordinate the street naming effort. Those submitting street names will be held confidential, until such time the City Council decides on a selection, then the author of the street name will be revealed. You may submit suggestions at communitydev@cityofsidney.org, or through direct message at facebook.com/CityOfSidney or Twitter.com/CityOfSidney.
All names submitted will be considered and revealed to the public as part of the city council agenda on Nov. 12.
City Manager Gary Person said the name “Toledo” is not representative of Sidney or western Nebraska, so he suggested providing a different name for the City Council’s consideration prior to the time the street improvement district is established. Construction on the street is expected to begin in the Spring of 2014.
The City Council has agreed to consider a new name and requested the public be given the opportunity to provide input. There’s a chance the new street name will carry all the way to 10th Avenue, because of 10th Avenue being a major north-south corridor through town. Very few existing addresses would be impacted by the change from 10th to Fort Sidney Road. It would still remain Toledo Street west of 10th Avenue.
